What stays on your device

Screenshots and recordings are captured, processed and saved on your computer. Saved files go to your Downloads folder through the browser, and Webshot keeps no copy. Your settings live in your browser's extension storage. Removing the extension removes all of it.

Webshot works with no internet connection. Nothing about a capture depends on our servers.

What Webshot can see

Only the tab, window or screen you point it at, at the moment you capture. It has no access to your other tabs, your history or the pages you visit. The small script it adds to a page draws the capture tools and reads the pixels you select; it does not read or send page content.

• Screen, window and desktop recording go through your browser's own picker. You choose the source every time.
• Microphone and camera are used only when you turn them on for a recording, after your browser asks.
• The clipboard is written to only when you copy an image or extracted text. Webshot never reads it.

Each permission, and why it is there

Chrome lists these when you install. Firefox uses a smaller set: storage, downloads, active tab and context menus.

• Active tab and scripting: draw the capture tools on the current tab and read its pixels when you capture.
• Tab capture and desktop capture: record a tab, window or screen. A picker asks which one every time.
• Downloads: save your files to your Downloads folder.
• Storage and unlimited storage: keep your settings and an in-progress recording on your device, without a long recording hitting the default storage cap.
• Context menus: add Webshot to the right-click menu.
• Offscreen: encode recordings in the background without an open tab.
• System display: read monitor size and scale so recordings are laid out correctly.

What Webshot never sends

• No analytics, telemetry, crash reports or usage tracking of any kind.
• No account, so no email address, name or password.
• No browsing history, open tabs or page content.
• No captures, unless you choose an upload or share option yourself.
• Nothing to sell or share with anyone. We do not hold personal data about you.

Features that send data only when you turn them on

Each of these is off until you choose it, and each one is described where you choose it.

• The web editor. By default a capture opens in the Webshot editor in a new tab. The image is handed to that tab inside your browser; it is not uploaded, and the editor runs in your browser.
• Upload and share links. If you set the after-capture action to Upload, or use the editor's share option, the image is sent to our server to create a link. This is the only time the extension talks to our servers. Email support and we remove an upload and its link.
• AI features in the editor. Optional, and they use an API key you supply. The image goes to that AI provider under its terms; the key stays in your browser and is never sent to us.
• Settings sync. If your browser syncs extension data, it may copy your settings to your other devices. That is run by your browser vendor. Only settings sync this way, never captures.
